Community Christmas Box Collection Drive 2013 ended Nov 22
Our annual drive to collect donations for Operation Christmas Child is now complete! Lion Elizabeth had posted posters. Lions Shauna and Deanna delivered collection 'Christmas Bags'. Lion Roger has acquired 125 empty boxes for distribution and pickup at the Magrath Pharmacy. Leos are working on creating posters as well for the School and around Town. Wed 20 Nov at 6:00pm we booked the SASH building for a 1 hour Box Stuffing party. 14 interested volunteers attended and helped prepare some 50 boxes, from items collected primarily from the Magrath School, in record time. Fri 22 Nov 2013 by 6pm at Magrath Pharmacy was the last day of the drive here in Magrath. We took all donations into Lethbridge to their collection points that weekend. Thanks again for helping us help you! Magrath Lions RESULT: We are pleased to report 81 donated boxes were safely delivered to Lethbridge depot on Sat 23 Nov 2013 by Lion Roger and Shauna (despite a fussy van engine). Many also chose to donate monies for shipping far beyond the $7 per box requested! We don't see all the donations, as many are included in sealed envelopes inside the boxes, but we did see several hundred dollars for additional shipping donations. Thanks to all for your great support this year. See you next time! Operation Christmas Child
Thank you again! Magrath Lions Magrath Campground - Day of Service .. OK .. so we have a little conflict here. So, we plan to combine the events and work the rest out online. Dear Club members: If you are not otherwise booked for a service project, Lion Shauna and I will be helping out at the Magrath Stake Campground - they have painting and cleanup needed there. I will have my phone with me if you call us you should be able to track us down. I will also post updates by email for current assignments. Thanks See you there!
The annual (2013) No Cost Clothing event, sponsored by the Magrath Lions and headed by Lion Elizabeth and Lion Tracie, was held Fri 14 Sep (for collection and sorting at Magrath Ice Arena) and Sat 15 Sep 9-1pm open to public (for free distribution). Many thanks to all the volunteer helpers (over 60 helpers) and for all the clothing donations. The arena was a nice location for this event. The tables had lots of space between them and it was easy for everyone to browse the selections. Clothing was on display on 2 dozen tables and bigger items were on hangers around the arena glass. After all the shoppers were done, we bagged up the remainder, some 40+ bags of clothes, for donation to Diabetes Society (for pickup on Mon). Thanks again to you all for clothing donations and all the help. Most came early for best selection, but still had new browsers up to 1pm. See you next time!
Our opening meeting for 2013 was held at the Magrath Fishpond near our new Terry Trainer Memorial Park. Started with a cleanup pass around the park and then had a pleasant picnic in the Town Shelter. Lion Roger plans to assist catch up of financial reports required by AGLC (the Aug 2012 report is needed before we can be approved for next Casino event in Jan 2014) and for outstanding Society Annual Returns for 2011 and 2012. Lion Elizabeth reported plans for our upcoming annual No Cost Clothing event to be held in mid September (14-15 Sep at Town Arena). She will organize flyers and place announcements in local church bulletins. We will be working this event in place of our Sep 2013 meeting - see you all there! Lion Roger.
Thanks to everyone who helped with the lions playground install last week .. especially to Lion Tom and the Town of Magrath staff and crew for arranging to find and install the gravel before the big Fishing Derby weekend! See this link to some photos: Album: 'Lions Fishpond Park Jun 2013' on Google+. I think it looks great and we are getting lots of positive feedback. We will install the plastic borders next week (now that they have arrived) and write the final check, but all in all .. its a wrap.
On another front, Lions Elizabeth, Tracy, Laurie-Ann and Alex and helpers competed the Lions Garage Sale II on Sat 15 Jun 2013 and managed to clear all the donated items stored in my Mom's garage and clean it all up before we made our way back home (sorry we were away that morning). Thanks, eh! Sat 21 Jun we installed the plastic borders around the perimeter .. yay - all done now! Have a safe and fun summer. See all you lions at our 2013-14 opening picnic meeting - scheduled for Sat 31 Aug 2013! Announcement 30 May: I just got off the phone .. due to never ending rain we are deferring our Magrath Lions playground install by 1 week ..to Thu evening 6 Jun and Fri 7 Jun all day for the assembly, then off to the Magrath Museum fundraiser that evening with cement and gravel coming the next morning Sat 8 Jul 2013. Thanks!
Update 22 May: The shipment has arrived and awaits our installation! Thanks to Town of Magrath (B Barfuss) who safely helped unload it with the town forklift - 2 pallets, 1 crate, 2 long metal posts. They have also prepared the 30x40 site nestled in the 'C' next to the fish pond. Calling all Volunteers! We need your help assisting in the new $30,000+labour/materials 'Terry Trainer' Memorial Playground (Pirate Ship Play Equipment) going in at the Magrath (Fishpond) Jubilee Park! Email us if you want to help out! We need 4 able bodied men on Thu evening 6 Jun. We need 4-6 strong pirate types on Fri (during the day) 7 Jun. We need 4 men to finish up the job on Sat morning (cement and gravel) 8 Jun 2013. The Town of Magrath is assisting us with some equipment and materials. We will be laying out and digging the needed post holes, pouring cement, organizing and assembling the various playground parts, and bolting them all together. It will be a fun weekend! Anyone who has a desire to assist us, please call Lion Roger or Shauna Davies or Lion Tom Spackman (project coordinator). No super human skills needed .. just willing and able. This year: "Great turnout for the Community Food Drive this year .. and I still have a van load (at least 200 lbs more) of items that were missed and brought in to the Pharmacy this week! Thanks to everyone for their great support this year!" Lion Roger -- and -- "So I must say that once again: YOU ALL ARE AWESOME!!! The total weight was 6421lbs, which is a cash equivalent of $12,842! You collected nearly 1000 pounds more than last year! I can’t even thank you enough for doing this for us!" Tonya Woolford Executive Director Lethbridge Food Bank 8th Annual Community Food Drive week ending Sat 27 Apr 2012 All is prepared for out upcoming Magrath and District Community Food Drive! Last year Apr 2012: "The total pounds collected was 5551 which is equivalent to $11,102. Thank you, thank you, thank you... Tonya Woolford Executive Director Lethbridge Food Bank" This year Apr 2013: "Total donations came in over 6500 pounds valued over $13,000!" Lion Roger The Magrath Lions Club organizes the event in conjunction with members of local churches - LDS, United, Lutheran, et al. The real heroes are all the local youth groups and their leaders/parents who drop off the 1300 flyers the week before the collection day and then go around again on the Saturday morning at 9am and 10am to pick up donations from all of you. Thanks also to time and equipment donated by drivers (Calvin Heggie, Scott Neilson) and their trailers (Custom Windows, Neilson Construction) and their time and gas to drive your donated food items into the Lethbridge Food Bank. Thanks to all the volunteers who load and unload the trucks! We are hoping for great weather again this year. If we happen to miss collecting from you, sorry .. but your donations can be still be left at the Magrath Pharmacy and Magrath Lions Club members will take them into Lethbridge for you as well. Thanks again. Do you have time to help load and unload food bank donations? Come to the Magrath Seniors Center parking lot Saturday morning. Loading trailers starts about 9:30am. We plan to leave for Lethbridge Food Bank after 11:30am and be unloaded in Lethbridge by noon or shortly thereafter. 1300 flyers have been printed and posters prepared for display in coming weeks. We have new volunteer organizers again this year so some advance training may be required. The folding of the flyers and stapling to the folded collection bags should be prepared in advance (traditionally by the LDS YW Groups in the 9 church groups in Magrath, Welling, Del Bonita and Spring Coulee). Youth groups in each of these assigned areas are to distribute the flyers/collection bags to each home 2 or 3 days prior to the Saturday collection day. Please do not ring or knock - just leave the flyer/collection bag hanging on the door knob. On the Saturday collection day each home is visited again at 9am and at 10am. Please again, no ringing or knocking - just collect up any bags of donated food and bring it to the collection area (in the parking lot west of the Magrath Seniors Center). Traditionally the collection is organized by the LDS YM Groups. We will have volunteers at the collection area to load the trailers and plan to leave by 11:30 am for Lethbridge. Thankyou for your assistance in this worthy project. Without everyone's helping hands it would be much harder to accomplish!
